Merrick from Florida finally got his Atlantic POD wet the other day and sent through his great email. Thanks Merrick.

“Hey Tim, I am real angry over this Atlantic POD.  We had some of the best waves around here in a long time, lined up, pure glass and I rode the POD. It rode so AWESOME that now I think this is my favourite board and not the asymmetric Orca anymore HA HA HA HA HA.

The pod fired up, i was taking nice drops, fading my turns , the waves lined up making it scream down the line. I got so tubed and came flying out one wave. Another wave i was s-turning down the line, the face opened up and went round and i was able to do a sharp cut back on the tail, pull it back around and get tubed. This board is going to Indo for sure. I surfed almost 6 hours today. it was waist to head high, over cast light offshore winds and i was able to grab some of the big sets before anyone else , i always do that LOL. Some of the guys paddling out were hooting as I came screaming down the set of the day - going so fast I love it.   One guy asked me do you surf Indo, I laughed and said “no i had never been there but i will be going”, he said the way you draw your lines and make your drops. i told him I am a kid who grew up surfing in the 70’s so I learned to draw my lines on single fins and I am all about style and speed.

Ok I am rambling now. The board is so much fun, fast loose and just great. Every board I have from you is very special in their own way.

East Coast EVOs

Atlantic POD and Orca sent over to Florida just before Christmas. With export packing by yours truly I am pleased to say they arrived without a scratch. Looking forward to more 2013 reviews from Merrick soon.

   Merrick had a couple of Freakfish off me a while ago, the Hendrix ink work was fun to do.

Merrick’s Atlantic POD bonzer EVO6 6’6” x 20 3/4” x 2 7/8”, Bernoulli concaves, cheek tail, beak nose… very happy with how the shaping went today, especially the concaves which are often tricky to get just right.

“Hi Tim - the Atlantic POD is a truly amazing craft. Was riding it as 6 fin (just 2 FCS honeycomb glass ones that came with a Firewire that snapped!!)and the grip is incredible. Paddling for fast jacking, barrelling, sand bottomed waves, turning as I popped up and dropping at 45 degrees !!! Wow - its a machine. Its bonzers all the way for me now - Ill never go back to thrusters. Thanks.”

One of the thing about bonzers is that all the jigs made to fit standard fins and boards just don’t want to work with bonzer concaves unless they are really shallow… just another reason why they have never been popular mass production boards, factories can’t churn as many out.

Fortunately Daz, Adam and I usually always find ways around the problems they present.

This is Daz fitting the mini-boxes for the LokBox system with new bottom contours I designed to make the production a little easier and the end result stronger. Pleased to say it really made a difference and LokBox bonzers are now back on the menu, which means more direct transfer of energy through the board and the potential with an extra set of fins to ride the same board as a thruster or even a fish. Charlie Rs board here will be the first to be able to enjoy the benefits and we look forward to hearing how it goes.

Grasshopper Atlantic POD

Thought you might like to see a board done by Richard of Grasshopper Surfboards in USA for Chad Davis. Chad asked me to help out with some details on my Atlantic POD EVO6 Looks awesome, and those cut laps really clean.

 

A few words from the shaper…

“6'3 x 21 x 2-7/8 | 15-1/4 tail and 14-1/2 nose | blank - 6'5 A red US blanks | glass 6x4 deck, 6 bottom. Not a typical bonzer bottom as concave goes tip to tail and all the way out to the rail, instead of the venturi type just in between the fins. goes from very slight single up front gradually getting deeper and transitioning into the full double barrel through the fins. double barrel concaves inside the v (spiral-v) off the tail. some small channels in between the bonzer runners. has not been ridden yet. originally he wanted glass on bonzer runners but the glasser talked him into fcs - haha! i dont blame him! i think its better this way as he can try it as a straight single, thruster, quad, 2+1, 6 fin, 5 fin. awesome! Richard.”
